Those last months, madagascar  has seen an increased interest through the results of internet search engines if we consider the following result from Google trend on the keyword “madagascar”

We can note a huge rise of the  interest beginning november 2008, mainly because of the cartoon “Madagascar 2 -escape to africa“. However, we can see from this picture that this interest has drastically  fallen in january 2009 as the movie’s effect also dropped.

Unfortunately, Madagascar (the country) is facing now a huge political crisis since the end of january 2009- and we can see from the graph here that a relatively small (compared to the cartoon effect) interest has risen on the internet mainly due to the crisis that is happening now in the country.

Although the national DMO  will continue to promote madagascar destination, and will keep on participating on international trade shows [fr] in order to reassure tourists we expect tough times for madagascar for the tourism industry for these next months.

I’ll be interested to have readers’s view/input on how to use social media in order to overcome crisis.Feel free to share your experiences/findings …

  1. i really feel for the local population especially for the ones depending on the cruises passage. diego forbid manifestations because a cruise was around and tamatave is “mourning” 2 ones. i know the hotel businesses are doing very bad and it will takes years to overcome this disaster. I hope you advices will be helpful to them for a better future (it looks like Miss Universe speech but I am very much convinced)

    good luck to you too

  2. Hey Joan, good to “hear” from you again.yeah it’s a pity cruises are reconsidering their sailing plan stopping by Madagascar.I also think, although the tourism industry is facing tough times, that Madagascar will recover from this crisis.I am still lost into readings on recent crisis recovery plans for india (after mumbai attack),or kenya (after their trouble couple of years ago)- it seems like it’s still a niche market and not much blog publications about it available so far- too much paid conferences/courses offered out there. But,let’s be positive and think that we’ll get out of it… It will surely take time but “the best is yet to come”

  3. Hey! Great posts. Would love to be a guest blogger for you once a month or so and you on my blog if you like. Max Hartshorne, the editor at GoNOMAD.com suggested I contact you to get some suggestions about what you think of my Travel Tech GURU blog and how I might be able to improve it. I also write for Travel Radio Host, Stephanie Abrams. Thanks for your input.
